Clean water is essential for human survival. The availability of various sources of water in a community does not necessarily guarantee safe water for its members. With most communities depending rain water; it is easier to assume that having the access translates to overall clean and safe water for them.Some of the assumptions that we have may include:
- An area receiving constant rainfall will have regular supply of water.
- That community members understand the need to purify water before drinking.
- Community understands that clear water is not clean and safe for consumption.
- That communities understand the need to store water even if they do have regular supply.
- That they know rain water is not safe and has to be taken through different stages of purification.
- Not all families are committed and able to boil their water for use.
An example is the Kinari community, an increase in rainfall causes a subsequent increase in pollution of water. The underground levels of latrines and their shallow wells are almost the same. When it rains, the water from the shallow wells gets contaminated with the wastes from the pit latrines.
The community has suffered several outbreaks of water borne diseases and this has mostly affected children. Looking through these problems; we have a few areas that we must tick through in order to solve these problems. Let’s use my layman's language and call it the community water cycle. Take note that it is not that which includes evaporation and precipitation.
Does the community have water? Yes/No
Is the water regular or constant in supply? Yes/No
Is the water clean and safe? Yes/No
So how do we go about it? More like connecting or ensuring that the three elements above are always ticked out. First, in order to give sustainable solutions to these problems, our approach is and was giving a listening ear to the community and their own stated solutions. If they do not have water; then an amicable solution would be drilling a borehole or even constructing sand dams. All these will depend on various factors such as climate, geographical location and other human aspects. In order to achieve equitable access to clean and safe water; we have sunk boreholes, ensured water filtration systems are in place and creation of sand dams within river banks. We aim to improve the water quality through increasing water use efficiency through: recycling and re-use technologies.
