Creating Sustainable Livelihoods one farm one greenhouse at a time

It is one thing to pioneer and another to maintain the legacy. We are maintaining it and this forms the main reason for this write up. In a community where vegetable consumption is low with little or no keen interest to its importance; we now have three greenhouses. Allow me to just give you an overview of this area. Scotching sun, dusty roads, raging winds, dry and barren areas of land covered with shrubs, thickets and a pool of acacia trees. Allow me to tell you about its people; full of life but pale. Too pale that they themselves do not know they are. An image that rings in mind is that of a woman sited under a tree, her posture showing her struggles to run away from protruding sun's rays that cut through the tree's non-leafy branches. Right beside her is an almost five year old girl standing looking across to her mother as if in agreement "Let's hear them."

The overview explains the need and the projects background. From a nutritional perspective; this community does not understand the need for a balanced diet and more so are not preview to its importance to their physical health. Even if some of them do understand, the truth is that they are not in a position to include vegetables in their daily meals. Some reasons for this include: low income to buy from the market and that vegetables are scarce, they depend on external supply.

The greenhouse project is an agricultural project adopting climate smart techniques to farm tomatoes, onions, spinach, kales and cabbages. We making this community more resilient and enabling them to make climate smart agricultural decisions in the face of changing climate and food scarcity. We support 172 families and in this this project 50 families are part of the smart and nutrition sensitive agricultural training. They are the trainers of trainers obligated to train fellow community members.
